Social media marketing effects on business

5 Ways Social Media Can Destroy Your Business’ Reputation

When it’s not left in the right hands, social media can actually ruin your business’ reputation – and it can be within seconds!

Take Amy’s Baking Company for example. The bakery featured on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and the owners started posting their angry responses on Facebook as the show aired. One of the responses to the repackaging and the reselling of the cakes that they didn’t make stated: “You people are all sh*t. Yelp sh*t, Reddits sh*t. Every sh*t. Come here, I will f*cking show you all.”

At VerriBerri PR & Marketing – Essex, our team of social media experts have put together a list of things you should avoid when posting on social channels:

  1. Talking About Your Products Too Much Don’t assume that social media is only used for advertising your products or services. Even if you know that customers would die for your products, endless sales pitches and hyping up your product or service will only irritate people, meaning that they will eventually unfollow you.

While some people may follow you to learn about the services you provide, you have to give them to keep coming back to your social media channel. You need to appreciate that social media is about relationships. So you should concentrate on building a rapport with your customers, not promoting your products.

  2. Posting Too Regularly

Okay, so your content is amazing but you’re still not getting any engagement – you may be posting too much! Unfortunately, if you churn out excessive amounts of content, your audience will feel flooded with information and get annoyed. Instead of posting all in one go, spread your content out over the week.

  3. Not Posting Enough

On the other end of the scale, there are people who do not post enough on their social media channels. Most businesses start up a Facebook page and post a few articles and photos, expecting that this will be enough to interest people. However, content for social media requires lots of planning and strategies to help your customers to engage. If you don’t have the time to think about what you’re posting, maybe it’s time to look into employing or outsourcing social media managers.

  4. Poor Customer Service

One thing companies often fail to do when posting on social media is respond to users on their page. While you may have just missed it, or you simply don’t have the time to respond to several replies; leaving the messages will have your audience feeling devalued and ignored. If they are so dissatisfied by your customer service, they may even write a bad review of your service, which can be detrimental to your business.

  5. Poor Grammar and Spelling

Always double-check your posts for spelling and grammar errors before you post them online. If you have too many errors on your channels, it comes across to the audience that you are not professional. Alongside this, the audience may see this as a lack of care to proofread your content, meaning they could mock you online.
