The Future of Virtual Reality for Social Media Marketing

As online marketing becomes more and more vital when looking to reach your audience, any tools that can help achieve this quicker are always useful. Virtual Reality is a three-dimensional image or environment processor used to create a visual and personal experience. Produced to put consumers ‘in the moment’, VR is now being used to help with marketing products and brands.

How VR works

Virtual reality headsets involve creating an immersive 3D environment. Each headset contains a screen in front of the eye, projecting an image for the consumer to see. As the headset blocks out all external vision, we lose all interaction with the real world. The aim is to enable users to feel in the moment, as though we’re actually in the situation – often associated with shooting or racing games. However, there could soon be a new market for VR technology.

In a recent study, it was estimated that a single minute of video content has the equivalent impact of 1.8 million words. It also showed that four times as many consumers prefer watching a video to reading about the same product or service. On the surface, it looks as though images are beginning to decline and with new technology making cinematography so crisp, it’s clear to see why.

This is why social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook are slowly being taken over with video content as it’s proven to increase engagement levels.

Using 360-degree cameras, VR headsets and controllers, this new form of marketing allows consumers to have a personal, hands-on experience of any product. Recording what a consumer sees through their headset gives an identical vision, in turn creating a much better experience. Rather than still images, consumers are able to have real-time feedback as they crave more immersion, ultimately helping them to make the decision whether they purchase the goods or not.

 

Facebook & Instagram

The two biggest social networks to begin utilising virtual reality are Facebook and Instagram. They’re also two of main business platforms for promoting a product. The main reason being that they’re created with visuals first.

Images and videos are what makes these social media sites run and as VR becomes more and more defined, it won’t be long until mainstream businesses are using this method to market their own product. This combined with the potential outreach of such platforms makes for the perfect marketing model.
