What is Content Marketing?

If you have overheard someone mention content marketing and not understood what they meant… then this blog is for you!

Content marketing is the technique of writing and distributing interesting, valuable and valuable content intended to attract a well-defined market with the purpose of gaining clients or customers. The important word in that sentence… valuable. It changes this entire sentence from one that could describe almost any type of advertising into something that holds more importance. Content marketing is something people want to consume rather than being forced to (such as TV, radio or magazines). The idea of content marketing is to provide as much worth to the recipient as possible. Despite me explaining this you are probably still not entirely clear; perhaps we could gain clarity from a few examples?

Infographics: Generally an infographic is an image that includes data, diagrams, charts and other relevant information. Infographics are great because if they are funny or interesting enough they are usually passed around Social Media.

Blogs on your website: creating a blog that provides the reader with helpful information that ensures the reader gains knowledge about the topic. The truth is, most blogs go on about how great that company is, and they are boring. In brief; That’s the difference between simply putting content on your website, and content marketing.

Videos: By creating videos to promote your product you are entering a largely ignored market. Why? Because many people have the incorrect assumption that videos are difficult and expensive. Have a think about what you have to teach. What could you put together that could change your fortune overnight?

These are just three example of content marketing, I could have spoke about books, podcasts, apps, white papers and so on.

Why Content Marketing?

You should never do anything without fully understanding why you are doing it. The first thing you need to be aware of is the four steps we take when we buy something.

  • 1- Awareness. You may have a need for something but how can you fulfill that need if you don’t know what will fill that void?
  • 2- Research. Once a potential client is aware of a solution they will usually look into the product or service via the internet, public opinion or testing it out.
  • 3- If your budding customer is still interested they will usually start looking around and comparing similar products or services to determine what the best fit for them is.
  • 4- Finally the customer will make their decision. If it is positive you may just find you have made a sale!

How Do I Get Started?

There are many firms, including us, that offer to assist you with content marketing services. If you do not have the time or skill to manage this yourself this is the perfect solution for you. If you do want to try your hand at this yourself the easiest way to get started is blogging. It will be difficult at first but once you get the hang of it things will pull together. Results will be slower than using a professional, but if you are willing to bide your time this may well be the best way forward.
