What Is SEM?

SEM, also known as search engine marketing, is a technique used by marketers to drive more traffic to a particular website. SEM aims to help your site rank higher on the search engine results page (SERP) under words/phrases that relate to your business, industry, or product. In doing so, this generates more attention for your brand.

There are two different techniques that fall under this umbrella term. These are:

  • SEO – Search Engine Optimisation
  • PPC – Pay Per Click

The Difference Between Search Engine Optimisation and Pay Per Click

As any professional will tell you, SEO and PPC are poles apart, despite having similar end goals. Although both techniques aim to improve your discoverability, the approaches taken to reach this point couldn’t be more different. Google, like all search engines, has their own algorithm. This is used to determine how helpful a website is, and how highly they should rank. Obviously, Google want their users experience to be the best it can be. This means making it easy for them to find exactly what they need. SEO involves making modifications to your website to better meet the criteria used in these algorithms. In other words, this approach aims to mould your website into what Google deem as ‘perfect.’ The more boxes you tick, the better your visibility. SEO is a type of organic search engine marketing.

PPC on the other hand is a non-organic form of SEM. This involves paying for your positioning under whichever search results you so choose. These are the options you often see at the top of the SERP with ‘ad’ marked next to them.

Organic or Non-Organic – Which Is Better?

If your experience with SEM is limited, you may be a little lost when it comes to deciding which route to go down, and understandably so. It’s important you get it right, and without direction from a professional, it’s on natural that you’re feeling overwhelmed. If this is the case, we’ve got your back!

When it comes to PPC, results are going to be almost instant. Sounds great, right? Whilst on the surface, this may seem amazing, it often pays to play the long game. Take it from the specialists.

Like with all PPC campaigns, as soon as you stop paying for your place on the SERP, your results also stop. Comparatively, the effects of search engine optimisation linger for far longer. PPC is great if all you are interested in is making a hard sale. If you’re looking for a long-term strategy and a loyal customer base, however, SEO is certainly the way to go. Not to mention, taking the organic route will also build your credibility, improving word of mouth, brand recognition and your reputation too!

Despite the above, pay per click isn’t necessarily a complete write off for all of you. This technique can be incredibly lucrative, providing you use it effectively. For best results from SEM, we highly recommend utilising both PPC and SEO in tandem with one another. If you are limited by a strict budget, however, the preferred route is always search engine optimisation.

What Do Search Engine Marketing Specialists Do?

Ironically, as specialists, our job is incredibly varied. To be an expert in this field, you need to be both creative and technically minded – two traits that rarely go hand in hand. Not only are we responsible for creating content and managing budgets, but it is also our job to manage the back end of your site too. In short, SEM can be an incredibly demanding process!

Day to day, we work with organisations to identify the best route for them. We take our time to sit down with our clients to get to know their business, where they currently are, and where they want to be. From here, we can work towards putting a plan in action. Once agreed, we are then tasked in the execution and management of this project.
